16.10.13 Mullum Music Festival

Tonight we played the tunes most likely to appear on the set list for the Mullum Music Festival. Though we didn’t get to ‘Heart Shaped Tattoo’ or ‘Apache’. All will be revealed very soon. Condolences to our lovely Bettina who has lost two loved ones so close together. It’s testament to what a strong and wonderful person she is that she turned up tonight as gave as she always does. We love you. We all have stuff going on in our lives and I hope our get togethers offer some respite when times get tough. Thinking of you too Al… all of us. We are the NRUO!!! Together forever… (unless we win the lotto, then we need to talk).

Tonight we ran some of the old set numbers to warm up, then re-visited the hula numbers for the Mullum Music Festival that we began last week. The method for learning the songs now is no charts to begin with. It helps one be more present in the music I believe. After a few runs through, the charts are handed out. I do hope you will not rely on them, as we are doing 3 flash mob performances at the festival and lugging music stands around would a pain and it interferes with interaction.

We started work on the final of the 4 Hula tunes, ‘Lovely Hula Hands’ and had a crack at a few ditties in the last 15 minutes including ‘Paper Moon’. I am always conscious of keeping a healthy balance between focused practice and having a bit of fun. I do hope I get it right. Please speak up if your needs are not being met.

Thanks for your hard work. Sincerely Stu.

Tonight was about consolidating the performance tunes for Spruke. Twas a great night of focus and fun. We made a few arrangement decisions and I believe we are in pretty good shape. Apart from the first recording of the somewhat controversial Butterfly Tree… This is my proposed running order for the performance. Please do comment. Thanks for your continued enthusiasm and dedication. Take care Al in this very tumultuous time. Looking forward to the big jam at Terry’s on Saturday September 14. (orchestra only). Many Thanks, STU

21.8.13… Sprukers Full Moon

It was a pretty full moon tonight and the animals were out to play… The 9 mainstays were in attendance… including Christine, Patsy, Alexis, Bettina, Jeanti, Al, Terry, Pete and Stu… this would appear to be the SPRUKERS! Tonight was a break through to me as we tried something a little bit daring with the segue from one tune to the next… this kind of thinking is exactly what I had hoped for when we began 14 months ago. Thank you all for your enthusiasm and commitment to greatness!!!! We need to talk about a weekend get together / rehearsal and perhaps talk car pooling to get to Brissie on Saturday Sept 21.

We Uke… We ROCK!!!

NRUO 14.8.2013

Tonight was about more preparation for our performance at Spruke. As Terrence has just become a grandfather again (Yay!) he was away, as was Jeanti, Bettina and Jan. Though Brad and Pete and Rob were there to fill the ranks and we soldiered on and had fun getting our stuff together and even tinkered with a new song by the Lumineers. (Thanks Kylie from MPS). Great night and well done every one for your focus. I just want to Say Christine you bring a lot of light and major congrats to Patsy, proud owner of a lovely new Maton Soprano thanks to the Cairns Ukulele Festival Facebook comp.

Brad… you made it. So great to have you along. Energy is what makes this beast great, and I have always loved your energy. Tonight we started the night… almost seriously… and the music felt great. Everyone listened tonight. We spoke about singing the particular rhythm for each song in your head and then sitting on the pulse and relaxing into the groove. Tijuana Taxi sounds great in this set. When we can do that the ukes resonate together and make a mighty sound. We named our ‘SPLIT arrangement’ (where some of us play long strums on the first beat on the bar and others play short sharps on the 2nd and 4th bar).

I want to say thanks for the birthday wishes (and sneaky gifts). Still some tightening up to be done with the arrangements though we are well on the way to greatness people!!! Thanks for your continued enthusiasm. Spruke Spruke Spruke!!!

We had a full house tonight. Robyn and Peter from Mullumbimby joined in tonight. Everyone was thrilled to have some new players along… welcome Peter and Robyn, you both sat in beautifully. So we ran a few tunes and tried a new method of learning a new song, namely ‘Come Dancing’ by The Kinks. We played the song without the chords in front of us in an effort to learn by sound rather than sight. It seemed to go down ok… it’s a deceptively tricky little tune though so I will chart it fro next time. We then put together our set for Spruke in September and ran through those. Alex brought along “BEI MIR BIST DU SCHÖN”.
